Moreover, the neck area is susceptible to the gravitational pull that makes the skin droop downwards while the body structure is able to sustain the pull thereby leaving the structure firm but the skin sagging in the neck region.
Causes of wrinkles around the neck
As we grow older, our body fat is redistributed around the body. Unfortunately one of the places we tend to lose fat is the neck, along with the eyes and cheeks. Lack of fat under the skin means that there is a reduced level of support and hence why older people tend to have sagging bands, often referred to as turkey neck, of skin around the neck and throat.
Excessive Exposure to Light
The skin on the face is delicate but that on the neck is still more delicate. This makes it more susceptible to damage caused by exposure to UV rays or any other form of harsh light.
We all know that the body fat is distributed all over the body. The fat on the neck, eyes and cheeks starts reducing with the advancement of age. So the elderly have sagging bands on their neck and throat which is referred to as turkey neck. Obesity can be one of the main causes of wrinkles on neck. The excessive generates bands on neck. Drastic weight loss in a very short span of time results in an extremely sagging neck skin.
During the process of aging, cellular activity starts diminishing. There is reduction in the production of estrogen, elastin and collagen. This leads to a wrinkled neck, wrinkles on face and a double chin.
Pollution, UV rays, smoke, rain, snow and other harsh conditions affect the skin on neck. Polluted water affects the skin to a great extent. The moisture content of the skin is affected by the polluted air and water.
If you don’t have a family history of wrinkles on neck, you can hope to have good neck skin. A certain amount of damage caused due to the sun and due to bad eating and sleeping habits, may not affect your skin when you are naturally blessed. Still, you should take care of the neck skin, as it is bound to be affected due to aging.
Imbalanced diet affects the skin on the neck as it affects the skin on other parts of the body. A deficiency of vitamins, especially vitamin E and minerals or a diet lacking protein content can result in wrinkles on neck at an early age.
Irregular sleeping habits or other occupational habits such as staying for a long time in water can damage your skin. Skin dehydration, or even excessively moist skin, excessive exposure to the sun or any kind of harsh light and harmful chemicals present in cosmetics are common causes of the wrinkles on neck.
Stress on Neck
The neck has to support our head. Due to the weight of the head and its constant movement, there is always stress on the neck. The law of gravity applies here. This excessive stress on the neck results in the pulling down or sagging of the neck skin. Wrinkles on neck can add some more years on you.
The best course of action is to treat your neck and chest in the same way that you do your face. Cleanse, tone and moisturise the entire area on a daily basis, and make sure you always wear sunscreen when exposing the skin to sunlight or harsh conditions like wind, rain and snow.
Because the neck is such a delicate area, some treatments used on other parts of the body are simply not suitable for neck wrinkles. The safest course of action is to apply a rejuvenating skin cream specially designed for the neck; however if you want more immediate results, some skin peels and laser therapies will work well. As with any form of skin treatment, it is crucial that you receive treatment from a trained dermatologist or surgeon
